Onwards to liberate buon me thuot

The above work of an ethnic minority armed woman standing side by side with a North Vietnamese Army (NVA) soldier refers directly to the liberation of Buon Ma Thuot on 6 January 1975, a key strategic objective in the Central Highlands.

The success of the NVA assault on this town was essential to the rapid outcome of the war. In fact, the successful storming of Buon Ma Thuot led to the chaotic retreat of Southern forces, which fled in panic from this strategically vital area. In the background we see depictions of some of the traditional wooden houses of the region bearing both North Vietnamese and Viet Cong flags (red, and blue and red respectively).
