keep hold of our guns to defend the fatherland
Emphasizing the importance of coastal defence was the principal theme of the many of the posters that dealt with maritime matters. They called for a vigilant guard to be maintained over the strategic bays and inlets that helped comprise North Vietnam's long coastline.
In the attractive image above, the now beautiful resort area of Ha Long Bay is well depicted in the background. The location holds instant and profound symbolic importance for the people of Vietnam, not only as a place of scenic beauty that is sometimes described as one of the 'seven natural wonders of the world', but also as a location filled with mythical resonance.
The poster shows an armed sailor with a white dove on his shoulder, in the background are traditional junks and the bow of a cargo ship. The famed picturesque islands of the Bay rise from the water in the distance.
